Hello & Welcome to the DysFUNKtional Blog!
I'm Jolene, one of the Vocalists for the band and I'd love to announce that I have the privilege of posting the very first blog note on this site! Currently, we are still under construction but be sure to come and check out our page each week! We will be featuring many of the group members as they share their stories, laughs, pictures or even lessons that they would like to share with all of you! If you don't know already, we are a Funk Band that is happily rested in New Westminster and we have played in such places as the Anvil Centre Grand Opening, the Heritage Grill, and many others! In my experience, I really enjoy the music that we play in DysFUNKtional. It's a taste of everything! From Amy Winehouse to Michael Jackson to The Manhattan Transfer, there really is no limit!
One of my favourite memories from singing with DysFUNKtional would be having to make up dance moves for particular songs. Specifically Runaway Baby by Bruno Mars. There was a point in the song where we added his little Super Bowl "A Little Quiet Now" portion where each instrument and Bruno Mars go quieter and quieter until there is absolutely nothing. And lucky enough, I had the golden ticket. Funny thing is, each and every time that we've performed Runaway Baby, the song has never been the same. Sometimes, the horn section would go low and sometimes they would be lying completely on the ground. Sometimes, I would be handing out business cards and other times I would be taking questions from the audience. And at one point, I burped. Loudly.
What I love about DysFUNKtional is that it is entirely impossible not to be yourself when performing. With every song, there is a method into bringing in who YOU are and creating something quite wonderful. Performing with the band has brought a smile to my face during every performance and at times that I'm not there, it really does bum me out. My fellow Vocalists (Andie, Claire D. & Claire G.) are absolutely so much fun to work with as well. I can even recall that just at our last rehearsal, it took us moments to start because Claire G. had brought out Swedish Berries and we all ended up giggling instead of harmonizing. Which I should mention. Everyone in this group is ultra-mega-beautifully talented. It's crazy. Like, a dog speaking to you while cooking pasta-crazy.
So, feel free to comment below with any comments or questions you may have for the band. Especially if you have requests as to what you would like to see or hear- We're all here to listen!
Here's a video from a Queensborough Halloween Party that we played at a few months ago with our ever changing Runaway Baby.
Until Next Time, Jolene
