I've had the pleasure of playing with our bass player Parker Elkins since grade 11 in our old jazz combo Muffin Top. Now, I'm definitely not the best drummer around and I will always need more practice, but Ive found that I've always been able to connect well with Parker musically, and I hope it shows positively in our performance.
Since Dysfunktional was formed, we've had Victoria Hebbard and Christina Qin on piano, and Kirill Yurtsev on guitar; as a rhythm section we've always had pretty good chemistry together if I say so myself (except for Amour T'es La... That song is way too darn hard to play for me). As for the rest of the band, I've had the pleasure to work with Claire Temple, William Clements, Andie Lloyd, and Jolene Bernardino in our school musical Footloose; I've known Claire Dresselhuis as Miss New Westminster through Andie Lloyd's experiences as Hyack Princess; and I've known rest of the band since last summer's band camp and simply being in NWSS music department. I've been blessed to get to be around and create music with all these wonderful musicians and human beings, and I really do enjoy all the time we spend rehearsing and performing together.
They say there is a deeper interpersonal connection between those who make music together: I'd say it's the nature of the craft that requires us to listen to each other, the little mistakes we make that only the people in the band would notice, those split seconds that we use our instinct to save each other from being lost, and the thrill of those times when we take risks to create beautiful musical moments in our performance.
They also say that you never truly feel alive till you go through a near death experience - but since I've joined this band, I don't think I will have to.
